Re: Access to safe, legal abortion appears increasingly less so, by Robin Baranyai in the May 25 edition of The Sault Star.
She is concerned about the Heartbeat Bills that are being introduced in various states in the United States.
Had she not used the word safe, I probably would not have responded to her article. Abortion is never safe. Using the word legal to assure one of the safety of abortion is false.
Many, many women have died from legal abortion. And millions have suffered some sort of complication as a result of safe legal abortions. Never safe. Complications are infection, excessive bleeding, blood clots, perforated uterus, convulsions, hemorrhaging, cervical injury, and even complications due to the anesthesia. Almost always, abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, spotting and bleeding.
Then there are the psychological effects, known as post-abortion syndrome. Some symptoms associated with PAS are feelings of grief and loss, sadness and depression, anger, nightmares, emotional isolation and coldness, increased alcohol and drug use, anxiety attacks, flashbacks of the abortion, anniversary syndrome, thoughts of suicide and even suicide attempts.
Baranyai says that pro-choice activists live by a mantra: abortion should be safe, legal and rare. Abortion is neither safe nor rare. In Canada there are about 100,000 abortions a year. In the United States, more than 600,000 a year. According to the Guttmacher Institute, statistics from 2010-2014 estimate 56 million abortions per year worldwide.
What a shame. We should be fostering a culture of life. We should be protecting the sanctity of life. We should be protecting our women from the falsehood of safe legal abortion.
Saint Mother Teresa, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 said it well. “Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all of the mothers.”
