College's esports team is in top five

Sault College’s first esports team is in the top half of its division.

The Sault Ste. Marie squad boasts a records of eight wins and four losses in Ontario Post-secondary Esports Association’s Rocket League play.

University of Waterloo holds top spot with a record of 10-2. University of Ottawa and Carleton University round out the the top three. Lambton College is the only community college ahead of the Sault team. There’s a total of 13 teams.

We’re doing very well and our students are loving it,” said vice-president corporate and student services Janice Beatty during a meeting of the college’s board of governors last Thursday.

Varsity sports are on hold this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but esports competitors can play from home.

Sault College has retained about 75 per cent of its varsity athletes.

They’ve been highly successful academically,” said Beatty. “They’re really thriving. We’re thrilled with that.”

Sault College wants to boost its recruitment of student athletes drawn from First Nations and other countries.
