If there’s a ceiling for Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, veteran defenceman Jake Muzzin isn’t quite sure he can see it.
“Every day something goes on where I just appreciate being on their team,” Muzzin said of his 22-year-old Maple Leafs teammates. “Whether it’s me getting beat in practice (by one of them) or seeing some of their skill they can just pull out of a hat, we saw it the other night against Detroit (in a pre-season game).
“It was a ‘sit-back-and-watch-the-show’ feeling. We’re grateful to have those guys on our team and let’s make the most of it.”
Put Muzzin the camp that sees a bright future for 19-year-old defenceman Rasmus Sandin, but let’s be honest, that includes anyone who knows one end of a hockey stick from the other.
“I’m thinking about what I was doing at that age — still figuring out how to play in junior,” Muzzin said of his time with the Soo Greyhounds. “He’s figuring it out in the NHL already. Nice to see a young guy come and be that mature. He is well above his years.”
