T-Birds bounce back

Soo Thunderbirds snapped a six-game losing streak on Friday, beating the Blind River Beavers 7-2 at John Rhodes Community Centre.

Jacob Kovacs had a pair for the Soo, which improved its Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League record to 4-6-1-2 (wins, losses, overtime losses, shootout losses).

Tyler Dunbar and Cooper Smyl had a goal and an assist each while Kurtis Rogers, Mackenzie Walkington, Tyler Savard and Matt Bazarin rounded out the scoring.

Colton Hayes had a big night with four assists as the home team held a 46-42 edge in shots. Dakota Meyer was in goal for the T-Birds, who complete the weekend on Saturday with a 7 p.m. home start against Espanola.

The loss for the Beavers dropped the record to 9-2-1-0.

Steelhawks handle Wolverines

Hannah Heimonen sparked the Superior Steelhawks to victory in Senior Girls High School Basketball action on Thursday.

Heimonen tossed in 13 points as the Steelhawks defeated the White Pines Wolverines 60-21. Madison Jackson scored 12 points in defeat.

In junior action, Superior Heights stopped White Pines 44-25. Emmalie Allard, Kaitlin Allard and Sadie Grawbarger had eight points each for the winners. Chloe Cormier and Ema Gibb-Sarlo had six points each for the Wolverines.

Jr. Hounds face Kap

With a 6-0-0-0 record, the Soo Jr. Greyhounds have a pair of Great North Midget League games scheduled for this weekend.

The Jr. Hounds are home to the Kapuskasing Flyers for games on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.).

Both are at John Rhodes Community Centre.
